How fortuitous that I just joined after this question.

I recently put in some effort to get the open-source KlamAV up and
running from packages under Kubuntu.  I detailed the procedure at the

Check the other FAQs for how to configure an email client for use with it.

I have to say, that I have noticed some instability with it .. but,
apart from the occasional crash, it generally works as expected.
