It seems to default to 'icon view' and that's the mode where it shows
me just a collection of 'cameras', not actual thumbnails of my
pictures. In 'photo view' I do get what you describe, thumbnails down
the RHS and a larger view of the selected one.
How can I get the 'icon view' to show me thumbnails, that's what I
really want.

Aha, that's how to do it, thanks! The 'file' protocol wasn't checked
by default. Now I have just what I want.
Thanks again.
