I was deliberately vague, because the scope for not-workingness was so huge :-)

I had mplayer and codec libraries installed (debian etch and
iceweasel), but had never been able to get anything playing.

Installing Simon's recommended Media Connectivity add-on and tweaking
the config has done the trick.

Many thanks for the suggestions.  It's brilliant to have Listen Again working.
