And the nesting was awful.

Something like:
    <ul>
        <li>item1
            <ul>
                <li>item2
                    <ul>
                        <li>item3
                            <ul>
                                <li>item4</li>
                            </ul>
                        </li>
                    </ul>
                </li>
            </ul>
        </li>
    </ul>

And for the styling:
    ul {
        list-style: none;
        margin: 0 0 0 0.5em;
        padding: 0;
    }

Should do it.
