Well, the new kernels may have later versions in them, so if you're happy to build a kernel, it may cure it. I have a note in mine saying "the latest driver supports auto-detection of chip clock" which suggests earlier ones don't.
If I remember correctly, i810 is normally on-board. You might be missing some modprobe option for your particular motherboard. Searching ALSA lists, Google Groups and so on may help find it. Failing that, it's probably a case of bringing it to a meeting so that someone can hear the sound it makes when it fails to work and see if they can recognise the problem ;-)
