Hi Bev
I always get a branded micro SD card and try and get fast ones
https://www.minitool.com/news/sd-card-speed-classes-sizes-and-capacities.htm...
e.g. Class 10, but with the fastest speed I can, e.g. Video Class 90.
Once you've got a good SD card, there are 3 things you can do (assuming it's Android)
1) Move documents, photos, music etc to it. You'll need some sort of file manager to do that, and make sure you tell the tablet where to save the pictures.
2) Move apps to the SD card. I use AppMgr III (App 2 SD) by Sam Lu. It shows you what apps you can move to the SD card. Most apps work on SD card, some don't. I suggest that you try moving a few. If an icon shows with a stylised SD card with an X in it, this is an app that may not work on the SD card.
3) Clear Cache. Most apps have a cache of information that's stored in case it needs to be used again. This can build up to a considerable amount of wasted space. AppMgr III can clear the cache of all apps in one go. If you're out of space, this is worth doing.
Hope that helps.

Tried another card (old phone card and teensy amount of storage) which was recognised. Got another card and it's happy now. It even seems to fit a bit better in the card tray.

I guess if you've tried another file manager, then the next logical thing is to try another card in the same tablet. Or to try with a OTG cable and a USB stick.
To test for duds, I have used f3probe on a USB stick, and did find one large stick bought on ebay was a complete dud. Took a very long time to run, but I got a refund in consequence.
If you don't have a card slot, you can get on ebay or amazon small adaptors to convert a card to a usb stick, very useful if you don't have a card slot in your PC and that will let you run f3 on the card on the PC.
