How do I run gammu? So far I've established that I can recharge my phone using a camera data cable. But that's it.

Have you tried Gammu/Wammu. It doesn't have your Alcatel listed but it may be worth a try. My Samsung wasn't listed and it has some functionality on it. You can download the Tarball from www.wammu.eu but it is also found in packages for some distros. Ubuntu has it in its repositories.
