David Nice cross over! I read Waynes reply. I just got an MP3 to play using mpg123. It played no problems. Therefore sound must be configured correctly. So why does nothing else play in any other app. Is there a GUI front end for mpg123, so I dont have to use command line each time. PS. The iBook is doing great, but I really have lost interest in Macs David. My wifes uses the iBook which was supposed to be an upgrade to this ThinkPad, but I cant seem to leave it nor Xubuntu alone.

I am still trying to fathom out MP3 playback on my ThinkPad 600. Sorry if I seem to ignore peoples suggestions, but I'm not. I must have just missed the reply. Anyway. I trying installing mplayer from Synaptic, and it appears to me to be Movie Player, which is already installed in Xubuntu. Correct me if I am wrong. Now I am back to getting no sound at all. I still get the crackling of the speakers on boot - like it is initialising them. However, it will not play any type of audio file. I have tried MP3, MID and WAV in both Movie Player and Exaile and no sound at all. I tried playing with Aumix and it looks like it is set ok, I also raised all the levels in Mixer for all instances. I also tried playing an audio CD, to no avail. You see the timers going but no sound comes out. Any help please?
Here is a link to the archive which has Wayne's original reply as to the best way to diagnose what the problem is:

I would advise you to try Wayne's suggestions and let us know the outcome, so we can help you further.
PS. How's the G3 iBook? http://bit.ly/a5xwdR
