This won't make any difference to you, but *I* like Gnome. I felt it needed saying. Cannot stand Unity. It's one reason why I use Mint (which I wouldn't have thought would be your cup of tea but I could easily be wrong.)
But what is less decisive, no surprise, is the choice of desktop environment. There seems to be no love for either Gnome or KDE (personally I can live with the latter). But there are so many choices! Fluxbox is definitely on the list to try though.
