Many thanks for that timely advice! I had another go this morning, having set the symlinks for asm, linux & scsi and - lo and behold - it all worked without further ado. Kernel compiled and is now installed.
Even better news - now the USB camera that I pestered so many people over works with Slackware and the new kernel, too.
