Also the kernel version you are running is fairly old in 2.4 terms and may be buggy so you may need an upgrade to a newer version.
I've cobbled together another machine with Slackware 8 (kernel 2.4.5) and Mandrake (kernel 2.4.8) so, as soon as I've obtained a plug-in card to provide USB connections, I'll try those.
