I find X is better over a momdem (when ssh tunneled), but without a ssh compressed tunnel, vnc is normally better for me when tuned right (8bit colors etc):)
I use VNC to remotely backup our servers which run BRU :) - a wicked backup program - never had a problem with it yet - touch wood :), and its reasonable on a modem - despite the extremely graphical GUI.

Depends on the machines involved, but slower than X.
Interestingly, I find VNC *much* faster over high-latency links (across JANet particularly) and it is hardly slow across high-speed links - suck it and see...
