I have installed windowmaker as a window manager, but the thing is that it is started "on top" of Gnome 1.4. I tried following some advice given on the debian website, but I couldn't get rid of gnome at startup. Where do I make gdm not start so I can use wmaker instead?
Well, the vicious solution is to uninstall gdm and friends, but picking "WindowMaker" from the session list on the gdm login screen really ought to stop Gnome from starting, I think? Are you sure that you haven't installed wmaker-gnome or done something else to make Gnome think you want it, such as edited your $HOME/.xsession file? Check and let us know.
PS I would be interested in attending some meeting, or perhaps at least over IRC (I am in Essex, with no transport, so I don't know how I could get to attend a meeting, which is where IRC would come in useful...:)).
Is Elmswell do-able for you? It's on the Ipswich-Cambridge train line and the meeting place is on the road with the train station on it. Other venues you'll have to shout for someone to give you a lift or grab you from a station, probably.
