I can get my android (4.2.2) phone to connect to my pc now via usb cable **but** I can't see the dcim folder or the download folder as I used to with my old phone. Indeed, I can’t see any of the usual folders you wish to see to transfer any files from a phone to a computer, even though I have installed a couple of mtp programs. I have googled for info on this and I know it's not an uncommon problem but I've yet to find out how to fix it. Do I need an app (in which case this post is way off topic) do I need to update some bit of software or what? I've no idea. Help.

Are you sure that the phone is connecting as an MTP device? There are usually two USB connection modes. One uses MTP (typically called "connect as a media device", the other is PTP (typically called "connect as a camera"). PTP will only mount the SD card (if you have one). MTP will mount both the internal disk and the SD card (you should see the phone mounted as something like mtp://[usb:002,005]/ in your file manager).
You should be offered the choice of setting by the phone when you connect the USB cable. If not, then check the settings on the phone and ensure that MTP mode is checked.

The problem is that you cannot mount a disk ---------------------------------------------------------------------
