This group has tended toward debian based distributions and is very friendly they are also fun down the pub. If you do this for fun you might care to try ubuntu as an example of a state of the art Linux distribution.
The only problem with changing distributions often is that you loose things you like and setup for a reason.
I work with a red-hat derivative but prefer debian sarge, and I recommend ubuntu. I use customised icewm as a desk top. xtern, ssh, and liferea for RSS and sylpheed for mail (I like mh format mail) nedit as an editor, and vim, as a second choice.
I also recommend chatting on IRC with us now and again, on a Monday.
