I think one thing that has come across from all of this is that I'll stick with Debian derivatives - nobody has suggested I head towards RedHat, which wasn't a surprise, but there's been relatively little enthusiasm for others like Gentoo which I was a bit surprised by.
From there: Well I think the conclusion is that Ubuntu isn't currently the best Debian derivative. I'm not against going for native Debian but Mint is drawing me in. I'll have to try MX on a VM as well though.
But what is less decisive, no surprise, is the choice of desktop environment. There seems to be no love for either Gnome or KDE (personally I can live with the latter). But there are so many choices! Fluxbox is definitely on the list to try though.
