Well the subject says it all realy :) im new to linux started with a slackware distrib a few mounths ago(kernal 1.12) but recently got a copy of an new'ish redhat 5.1... well not that new but at least itll compile nmap and allegro so im happy. Well im just a computing student at kings lynn with an interest in linux and computing in genral(i do have a *life* out side of computing as well...).
Well you failed the initiation test then :o)
I note that dead rat 5.2 is a tad old (I started with it back in '98) I'm sure that if you give someone your address they can send you a Debian CD.
I should go with debian if you want a first class system or get an easy life with a new copy of mandrake or suse. (I use suse) Redhat is now on version 7.1 or a greater number, I know version numbers are suffering from inflation but do get a new distrabution as much has improved since your distrabution was released. Notably deasktops, Netscape 4 being included in the distrabution not to mention the security updates since then.
oh i also have bad spelling due to the fact im sydlxeci ;) ill have to try your irc room some time.
Me too, and thats why I replied to the email
I have bad spelling as well but I don't have the same excuse :o( We don't descriminate against anyone. Welcome, ask questions, answer those you can, but make sure you stick with it!
One of the most experianced users of linux I know is still using SuSe 5.2 as he uses linux rather than fiddles so a lot of the important things are the same but I can resist seeing the rate of change in linux. (by Observation its very very fast)
In fact come to think of it all the stuff I NEED with the distribution are the same to my observation, its just they keep upgrading bits of it all. GlibC (all the basic C libarys) has been improved and a new version has been released the kernal has moved on. But since I use Linux as a platform to program in C++ and access the net I could survive on a distribution that old I would not.
Good luck.
