Mogrify modifies the image directly; convert makes a copy and modifies that :)

Similar and different. 'Imagemagick Tricks' by Salehi recommends modifying with mogrify and creating with convert. I keep original pics in a directory and copy to another to be modified, that way one always has an original to return to. In the book it uses convert to create logos on shapes and such like. Convert is a creation tool which is not really the case with pics. It's a while since I explored it's use.
