Telephone wire is Cat3 - you might be able to get it to work as Cat5, use the coloured pairs (blue with white stripe and white with blue stripe is one pair) and its 1and2 3and6 for the Ethernet connections.
The home wiring can be used with HPNA (Home Phone Network Alliance) adapters, but they are about £50 the last time I looked. Some ADSL routers have HPNA built in - 2wire is one.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to use an existing internal telephone cable as an ethernet cable by changing the faceplates on the sockets?
