You can steal the website icon by getting the favicon.ico file. eg http://www.google.co.uk/favicon.ico
There a bit small for desktop icons though I think they have to be 16x16 or 32x32 pixels in size, its a nice idea though, maybe there is a way to have the favicon on top of the star or something similar.
