Thanks Nick,
Now I'm thinking that this is a bug with the ide-cd kernel module and I think it relates to (re-)writable media but ONLY those with large files on them. The ones I can't get to mount either have tarred back-ups on them or have 6 x 700Mb Xvid ripped movies on them. (Re-)Writable media with smaller files seem to mount OK.
In Gnome, System->Administration-Device Manager reports mounted worm media correctly as DVD-R's. However media that fails to mount (DVD-R's) are reported in Device Manager as being DVD-RW's and blank. But they aren't blank but if I do put a blank in it is recognised as such and Gnome pops up a dialogue asking what I want to do with it.
I'm going to remove Ubuntu 6.06 and try a different distro. I am currently waiting to be re-connected with broadband and only have a mobile phone and GPRS Easy Connect to access the Internet so I'll be going incognito for a couple of days until I can get access to my e-mails again.
Thanks all,
Martin

Hi Martin I cannot decipher kernel message, but have had similar problems with Suse 10.1. Dvdwriter stopped writing on Suse and failed to read some CD/DVD's bought new DVD rewriter, that also failed to funtion correctly. Tried it on Etch, and Gentoo, fully functional, also tried old one on same, fully working. When writing, on Suse it would "commence write" then immediatly "close session" K3b gave "unknown error" I believe this problem, with me, commenced with Suse after last update.
