Just to second the advice about external modems (with the ultimate disconnect feature in the form of a power cycle!) and to mention www.microlanduk.com as OK people to buy from, but I'd order over the phone this week if I were you. (Apparently they're a bit uncertain about the order processing machine, but they *think* it's fine.)
P.S. Does anyone know of any Linux groups in Bury St Edmunds or local as = I don drive and though I am not an expert i would like to learn more.
I would think that someone would pass through there on the way to an ALUG meeting, so appeal nearer the time (third Sunday of each month), or if you can find us a venue, ALUG could come calling on you ;-)
Alternatively, there is a Cambridge LUG, but their subscriber to this list just started bouncing mail :/
