Your story suggests that the problem is woken up by this particular PDF file.
I suggest you test it by printing to file from Acrobat. The result will be a PostScript file.
Then try
a) viewing the PS file in ghostscipt/ghostview/gv ; if this works try printing it from gv. If it doesn't work, are there pages which you can print to file which do work?
b) try printing the PS straight: lpr file.ps
If you get further interesting behaviour, come back to the list!
