have you tried
lspci -v
This will list all devices on the PCI bus.
I get quite a long output (can email it to you off-list if interested) but, unfortunately, it does show the network card as a RTL8139:
00:0f.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139 (rev 10) Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RT8139 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 18 I/O ports at ec00 [size=256] Memory at cf002000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256] Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled] [size=64K] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
A lot of the other devices shown on the output are SiS so I will have a go at the sis900 driver you suggested tonight after I have given my poor old frustrated brain a rest.
Networks can be bastards at times.
Yep... I am rapidly coming to this conclusion as well!
