Tried another card (old phone card and teensy amount of storage) which was recognised. Got another card and it's happy now. It even seems to fit a bit better in the card tray.

To test for duds, I have used f3probe on a USB stick, and did find one large stick bought on ebay was a complete dud. Took a very long time to run, but I got a refund in consequence.
If you don't have a card slot, you can get on ebay or amazon small adaptors to convert a card to a usb stick, very useful if you don't have a card slot in your PC and that will let you run f3 on the card on the PC.
