This is causing me great grief trying to set up fetchmail to get my mail from gmail's new pop3 server: they use the ssl pop3 995 port but my fetchmail refuses to work with ssl.

I think POP runs on port 995 if it is encrypted/SSL, 110 if it is in the clear.

That's correct. From /etc/services (which is where to find out what port corresponds to what):
pop3 110/tcp pop-3 # POP version 3 pop3 110/udp pop-3
pop3s 995/tcp # POP-3 over SSL pop3s 995/udp # POP-3 over SSL
Interesting, though, that (a) KMail wanted to set 995 as default, (b) The ISP rejected 110. I thought most ISPs used (or at least accepted) 110 (plain POP3), so that 110 should be the default. It's almost as though KMail *knew* that this ISP wanted POP3s!
