Ted I just tried to run alsaconf and couldn't get it to work. I also tried it using sudo. It just says command not found.

Hi I am still trying to fathom out MP3 playback on my ThinkPad 600. Sorry if I seem to ignore peoples suggestions, but I'm not. I must have just missed the reply. Anyway. I trying installing mplayer from Synaptic, and it appears to me to be Movie Player, which is already installed in Xubuntu. Correct me if I am wrong. Now I am back to getting no sound at all. I still get the crackling of the speakers on boot - like it is initialising them. However, it will not play any type of audio file. I have tried MP3, MID and WAV in both Movie Player and Exaile and no sound at all. I tried playing with Aumix and it looks like it is set ok, I also raised all the levels in Mixer for all instances. I also tried playing an audio CD, to no avail. You see the timers going but no sound comes out. Any help please?_

This may or may not help, since I don't use Ubuntu, but it may at least be relevant.
I encountered a similar problem with Debian installed on a laptop (Advent 8117). It turned out that the default sound system at boot was OSS; I sussed out somehow (I've now forgotten how) that it would be worth trying to switch to ALSA. That succeeded. So now, after any new reboot, I run 'alsaconf' (by hand as root) and then it works (it takes a few minutes to complete). If I don't run it, then I get no sound.
I don't know why OSS doesn't work!
Hoping this helps, Ted.
