The problem I was having, that my machine hung in the BIOS when I added a UDMA100 disk is now solved. My primary disk did not like co-existing with anything else at all. I discovered this when I got hold of another old-style disk *and* swappped the IDE cable. Remove the old primary - all is fine; put it back - only one disk can be connected.
