I have done this before after logging into someone elses box killing the mp3 player they had running and then cating the kernel to /dev/audio. It certainly made them jump! as they were wearing headphones at the time.
Doing this kind of thing reminds me of loading software on my 48k rubber key Spectrum, ahh blissful days.
You can also have fun by getting the kernel patch that allows audio to be played through the pc speaker (the one that tends to only go beep) and using a bit of ingenuity you can scare people at night by getting barely audible voices to come out of the speaker (or ones saying help). This can be really funny when you play the trick on the new boy who is working the late shift on support :-)
