ald0: You were spot on Wayne, it was caused by an update that may have been stopped before completion. I have done a reinstall & everything is up & running again.
I am playing with different Linux dists on several old machines, so I may be asking more questions soon.

There has been a lot of muttering on the ubuntu forums of late of an update that managed to not complete before triggering a reboot request. I am not quite sure what it broke but I think it was something fairly significant and systems were locking up just after the file system check..just like yours.

Might be worth searching on http://ubuntuforums.org

Chances are you'll need to boot it up from the installation media and complete whatever update failed chrooted into your installation.
