Is looks like the USB host controller is crashing. Maybe look for a firmware upgrade for it (or for the BIOS/mother board)?
I guess I can look on the Acer site to see if there's anything, though does Linux use any of the BIOS/firmware when up and running?
Also when you say "identical" have you tried swapping around all combinations of wireless adapters and track balls on both machines to see if there is a pattern.
I think so, I have three 'senders', two trackballs and a keyboard and I think they've been around and about quite a bit.
