[ALUG] Pan

On recommendation (ALUG Passim), went looking for Pan and found quite a lot of sites. It seems that it's written for Gnome, which is fine on the Acer as I use Gnome on that, but this Eee is under the thrall of KDE. Any reason why Pan can't be accessed from that? TAAAW, it's listed as a newsreader. Does it do mail a) at all? b) well? Any outstandingly important reason why it is recommended that I should correct any errors on 'my PC' before downloading?
