Orange used to have a modem which you could dialup and send messages through, a simple expect script woudl suffice here..
I'm not sure if they still have this modem online now.. it's been a while since I played with it ;) try contacting them (or vodaphone/cellnet/one2one)... Sz

The way it was done for a company I used to work for was using a vodaphone unit, just plugged into the network and used a radio pager system to send/receive the SMS's
meant that you could send/receive messages on the desktop, was not cheap

(OT - but ALUG appears to include a lot of people with varying skills)
Does anyone know of the machine requirements to handle incoming/outgoing SMS messages? I am guessing a telephone line, modem and basic software to convert incoming SMS calls to text to be stored on the local machine.
I am thinking of a competition like system:
- People are asked to text a number with entry answer
- System picks up the number/entry (and stores them in a db)
Competition winner is chosen randomly and informed by outgoing SMS message.
How is this normally done, e.g. radio show comp. entries? Can this be done in Linux?
Ashley
