Problem: what is a good cheap pci isdn terminal adaptor to use bearing in mind I may need fax capability (I use a BT Speedway 128 which is a re-badged AVM Fritz).
good, cheap, fast == pick any two ;) I figure that the fritz cards are like 25 quid each or something? other than that i don't know what the other options are under linux.
Bigger problem: I have never configured either fetchmail nor sendmail before (my modest mail requirements are currently satisfied by kmail configured to get mail directly from a pop server).
Fetchmail is not really a problem to setup, but how many ppl are going to be using this system? Sendmail is a bit sucky though, and I have never bothered trying to configure it myself. I do rather like exim though.....
Biggest problem: I know nothing about samba, iptables/ipchains or any of that stuff.
No need to worry about that, as I can share some configs with you... actually maybe I will do something to the Alug website where we can share configs for doing these kind of things, I have scripts to do IPMasq and IPChains or IPTables, I have samba configs and example DNS configs etc. etc. (they may not be the greatest configs but they do work (kind of!!))
Massive problem: I'm likely to have to maintain this machine remotely either via direct isdn dial in or via the net.
eeek, not so easy. Who is going to be the ISP? you could do it via ssh but you really need to get a static ip address or find a dynamic DNS provider.
The distro will most likely be Mdk 8.1 but I'm open to suggestions oh and the down side it will have to dual boot into Windows 98 occasionally to run some bit of bespoke software that won't run under wine for some reason. Any suggestions on what hardware will be gratefully received, first thoughts lean towards 1Gig Duron, 512Mb pc133 ram and 40Gb ata100.
Hardware is hardware really, I am using a Pentium Pro 200 at the office with 256Mb of RAM and about 6 gigs of diskspace to do the same thing, I reckong that you are maybe slightly overspecced on hardware but then again it does have to run windows ;)
I'm starting to feel well out of my league here expect lots of cries for help on irc.openprojects.net:#alug.
heh, reminds me that i will go and play with the alug wiki website (btw /me likes wiki, already updated the FAQ once today!!) to point out that ppl are in #alug during the week not just on Monday nights, we may not always be talking but it could be useful for ppl to know.
Anyhow maybe i should write up a home networking, fileserving, firewalling, printing, etc. etc. HOW-TO at some point...
