I was glad to hear about the IRC involvement - I'd thought about trying that out before, but wondered if it might be a bit too geeky to pull out the laptop for that in a pub.
It was a little entertaining to drop in on a live pub meet without having to travel - Perhaps setting up a web cast would be the next step....
heh ... and it's a frightening coincidence that our meet times match the official ALUG IRC monday meetings!
I had been wondering whether we could setup a java applet or something which could be used to allow people to join the IRC channel without running a client. Not looked into the complexity or security issues of that, though ... and I figure I've been quite pushy enough about the website so far ... perhaps I should let the dust settle first. :)
The only real problem is that the Java applet will only talk to the webserver it was served from, and we're not the sysadmins incharge of the server, and I'm not sure they'd appreciate us forwarding connections over to a real ssh server.
Will take a look at what's available when I've got some tuits though, preferably some round ones!
What I had also thought I might do was create a wiki page for ALUG suggestions ... where people could brainstorm ideas about useful improvements on what is already in place, and new ideas like this. That could be a useful record of feedback for people who "own" components like the website, the library, the planet etc. as well as giving people who are bored somewhere to go to see if they can find anything they might want to play with.
Unless anyone has any objections, I'll probably add that ...
Sounds like a plan type wassbob.
