Finally got the problem sorted, thanks to everyone who helped, I used the smp kernel and all is now ok..

Managed to get the lilo problem sorted out, a typo in the lilo.conf, I was loading vmlinux.x.y.z instead of vmlinuz.x.y.z .. lilo -v worked :o))) BUT, on reboot I got a Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs oon

Depends if you need things from 2.4 or if you need things to work (I hear IR is broken in 2.4 -- fixed yet?)

So, recompile that kernel image with less in/more as modules/ using
"make
bzImage" to get better compression.
