I would skip Apache for a local server, for low traffic, you hardly need the power of such a beast. On my tiny little network, I use Boa. It was fairly easy to install and configure. Supporting cgi as well as the usual http traffic, it serves my needs - From time to time, I open it up to the world and log a few Apache exploit attempts, even with these script kiddies trying to break the system, Boa copes quite well.
