The choice is yours my friend, but remember Epson printers do have support under Linux. Within Ubuntu alone this is evident and within the link I have given. Reading through the numerous links Epson and Canon came out on top for economy over HP, but I am sure you can make your own informed choice :) I must agree Lexmark are crap, stay away. Serviced many types of printers and these are the worst! Seems Dell has gone for the cheap root rather than the quality root, shame.

Many Epson printers have/had combined carts and those links are for older generation HP machines, none of which are on the OPs short list. My experience of Lexmark has been that the printers produce awful quality prints, have poor (no?) Linux support and are /very/ expensive to get new carts for.
I found so many reviews. I choose the Epson RX420 because it was rated as a good linux, economical, space saving, high spec, and lastly cheap option
:) I
am awaiting delivery for the item, Good luck.
From my experiences with inkjets they really aren't worth the bother anymore unless you *need* colour printing. I have given up on my (Epson photo 900) inkjet and it now gets the cheapest compatible carts due to how it ate vast amounts of expensive ink and would clog the nozzles on a regular basis which would require dozens of nozzle cleaning attempts (and using more precious ink) to clear the think, this was also the same with my old Epson (fwiw Epson printers have the print head built into the printer, if it gets clogged you can't replace it) but my parents HP (which had been icky) at least has the print head built into the print carts.
The reason I said to go with either the HP or Brother from the posted list of choices was because they should both work with Linux :)
I also recently took the decision to get photos printed from an online lab as they can do much higher quality prints than I can with less hassle and probably around the same cost and that if I need to print something in colour I will just take it to the local print bureau who have decent printers and don't charge very much at all. Oh, and I have a Samsung ML-1510 laser for cheap copies which I can refill the toner carts for not much at all :)
