As a recent proud owner of an eeepc 901, and after not too much
searching and fiddling to get standard Ubuntu on it, the following
combination has worked a treat for me:
1. Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 (standard desktop edition)
2. Kernel from http://array.org/ubuntu/ (to get wifi, screen etc.
working easily)
3. Intrepid ACPI Scripts from
http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/~elmurato/EeePC/ (to get the
function keys and extra buttons working)
An alternative worth considering is the script from
http://eee.ricey.co.uk/ which uses the standard Intrepid kernel and patches some userspace stuff up. There is also an installation guide there.
Intrepid has drivers for the Wifi (which 8.04 didn't) but they are a seperate package called (something like) linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-7-generic_2.6.27-7.4_i386.deb which is on the CD and in the repository.
