Well, if you're after "pure sun" jdk 1.2, you're out of luck - the common apt sources for java, ie:
http://www.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.blackdown.org/java-linux/debian potato non-free
...only give you jdk 1.3. If it's only a jvm you're after, you
could try
running it in kaffe.
Just what I was looking for, downloading right now. Assuming that 1.3 is backward compatible with 1.2 right??
Otherwise, your best bet is to grab the tar.gz binary from java.sun.com, and install it in /usr/local/ or /opt or whatever the politically-correct FHS-compliant location is this week.
I do prefer installing .deb's than .tar.gz's for this exact reason, now I've cleanly rebuilt my servers with woody. Will be back if it bombs out... Cheers. David.
