To be honest I have found HP to be very costly on ink as well and tends to waste a lot of ink with combined colour cartridges. Though have any of their printers colour seperated carts? These may help:

I found so many reviews. I choose the Epson RX420 because it was rated as a good linux, economical, space saving, high spec, and lastly cheap option :) I am awaiting delivery for the item, Good luck.
Thanks for the pointer to the Tom's Hardware site, I used to use it many moons ago but hadn't though of looking there for printer information.
The major issues with Epson all-in-ones for me are:- No Automatic Document Feeder for copying multiple sheets, this is one of the things I really want that I don't have at present.
No Fax, I'd have to keep my Brother thermal paper fax and so the space saving of an all-in-one is rather lost.
Having said that the Epson RX500 and RX600 are attractive as they would replace my current scanner as well as the HP printer because thay have a slide and negative scanner.
