Anyhoo, they asked me to find out some info for them in regards to Linux servers, as they are getting broadband internet soon. It's roles would be: firewall/router and MP3 file server (they also make music). I guess they may want to serve MP3's using an FTP package, and resumable downloads may be a priority, as they would be serving dial-up users.
I would imagine they would use a dedicated server, of minor spec (their last one was called Plank, and in fact, really was a plank of wood with a motherboard nailed onto it!). Not sure whether it's ADSL or Cable they're going for, but I suspect that the connection will be USB, which would necessitate a higher kernel version than most reliable/stable distro's supply be default. (They have UNIX experience, compiling a new kernel shouldn't be a problem for them).
FYI, it is possible to get broadband connections with RJ-45 presentation, rather than USB (we have an ADSL router in our office, with a cross-over cable into existing hub).
Furthermore, check with the broadband provider if you can host the specific services you need on their network. I would guess they block port 80 (for web servers) at a minimum.
