No - still unable to gain entry. I'm now about to do major surgery, overinstall or re-install, since I have nothing to lose. However, many thanks for trying to resolve my probs.

My thinking was that your problem might be related to several flavours of weirdness with ubuntu upgrades - where you can get either a munged fstab through the upgrade conversion or a strange problem with the system trying to use the wrong root partition after a kernel upgrade.
