I think the pctel is what my PC used to have in it. There's another, GPL'd, free software driver for them that uses the closed-source firmware from the proprietary one, but it actually compiles and doesn't cause a panic if you rmmod the driver. That will give you better results, but it's still flaky. I ripped mine out and went back to the external modem. Faster, lower CPU load and fewer crashes. (The free software driver author pointed the finger at the firmware. As far as I know, pctel aren't developing it further.)
