I'm enjoying fastmail at the moment for my custom domain email hosting needs (shout if you'd like a referral code for 10% off your first year) - on the two occasions I've needed support, they've been fab. It's a long story, but I'm also using forwardemail.net for miscellaneous email forwarding, and informal distribution lists. Both are basic, easy to setup and 2 years in... "it just works"

I did try pobox.com (from fastmail) to setup something for a charity I'm involved in, but for some reason, at that time, they were taking a couple of days to get back to me on queries, so time started dragging on, and we did everything basic we needed via forwardmail.net (setup in about 3 minutes flat).

They can do, though I just point my MX records to Google.
