Tried it. (See above.) Asus obviously has no confidence in the judgement of its customers... I really must get down to limbering-up the Acer Aspire 5000, which has lots of advantages - a screen I can see, passwords I have recorded, Debian (Lenny), a decent-sized HDD, built-in DVD drive, and USB which allows memory to be plugged in (and work) at the same time as the mobile internet dongle.
