I'm sending entirely through a smarthost (either Mailgun or AWS SES). Both still require a few DNS records for those purposes but they very helpfully tell you what to use! As to exim: I don't have a problem with either postfix or exim but both seem to me to be excessive for just mailing via a smarthost.
