- Manually select the area I want to use as the thumbnail

"xxx.png" to a "thumbs" directory.
As few additional steps as possible so that the focus is on the selection of area, not the process.
Note that It's likely I'll want the output format to be png regardless of input format (or maybe jpeg, not yet decided - but it'll be a global choice not determined by the input format. That said I can post-process using imagemagick "convert" if I have to.
Thoughts?
Backup the files, so you edit but still have the original to hand.
Use Gimp. Open all the files. Use crop to selection. Save to the original file (i.e. Export, rather than Export as). Quit gimp.
Then use image processing tool/tools to get the right size. I tend to use mogrify (part of ImageMagick) when I need to do a batch resize of images. I suspect it will do everything you need. Experiment, but backup your cropped files again first.
