Magazine duplicators don't know enough about Linux to actually test the discs they produce and will quite happily print many thousands of the things that should only be used as drinks coasters.
The magazine, if they know about the problem, don't usually admit it, as it makes them look bad. I can only think of one case where replacements were issued.
Even better are books with CDs in with them :-/
Buy your CDs from someone who a. knows enough to test them properly; b. is honest enough to replace duds.
