Hi again,
So I'm sitting here up in our SE lab, connected by JANET, CD-R in the box, d/ling various popular 'ix stuff like GNOME/KDE, Apache, GIMP, etc., and I'm thinking, this could be maintained and updated by ALUG members, kept on an ALUG FTP site, written to CD before our meetings, and distributed then to our members.
We then know what to get, and can update it when new versions and new s/w get announced by Freshmeat, etc.
I am currently working/aiming at the following:
.tar.gz/.tgz .src.rpm/.i386.rpm (latter where src not available)
I include the rpm as it is the most popular of the packaging formats.
So, I'll do the honours and create the ALUG1 CD-ROM, packed with stuff you either need new or need updated, and if no-one objects, members can continue on from there... Can an ftp.anglian.lug.org.uk be arranged with write-access for ALUG CD-ROM admins, anon read-access for everyone else? We ought to have some web-interface too for a ChangeLog, requests, etc. Any objections?
- Now I *really* need JANET from home ;-)
Regards,
James Green
